About UEF
The University of Eastern Finland (UEF) is the most multidisciplinary university in Finland, and home to approximately 16,000 students and 3,200 members of staff. Our high standard of interdisciplinary research and education respond to global challenges and build a sustainable future. Our research is ranked among the best in the world in several fields.
The A.I. Virtanen Institute for Molecular Sciences is a research institute that responds to the global health challenges created by the aging of the population and changes in lifestyle by focusing on the research of brain and cardiovascular diseases.
Katja Kanninen, PhD, is a Professor of Cellular Neurobiology at the A.I. Virtanen Institute for Molecular Sciences at UEF in Finland. Her research is focused on the cellular and molecular mechanisms in brain disorders, including Alzheimer’s disease. Her group uses highly translational in vitro models of human cells and in vivo models of neurodegenerative diseases to investigate how different environmental factors and lifestyle affect the brain. She also utilises untargeted omics approaches to discover new disease indicators. Professor Kanninen participates in several MARKOPOLO WPs and is the co-lead of WPs focusing on preclinical studies.
