About DCS
The Danish Cancer Society is a patient organization that houses a large research department, the Danish Cancer Institute, dedicated to various aspects of cancer research. Within this institute, the Work, Environment, and Cancer (WEC) group is one of 18 research groups. WEC focuses on conducting epidemiological studies to identify risk factors for cancer and other diseases related to occupational and environmental exposures. A key strength of our research lies in leveraging Denmark’s unique administrative and health registries, which has enable us to establish a nationwide cohort with >5 million persons with individual-level information on: residential long-term exposure to noise and air pollution, follow-up for a plethora of diseases and conditions using hospital, prescription, birth, and mortality registries, and yearly socioeconomic status (SES), including education and income.
Using this unique database, WEC will play a key role in MARKOPOLO Work Packages (WPs) 4 and 5. Our primary tasks include: 1) investigating differences air pollution exposure according to SES (WP4), 2) evaluating exposure-response functions for noise and air pollution in relation to outcomes in children (WP5), and 3) evaluating exposure-response functions for noise and air pollution in relation to outcomes in elderly (WP5).
